How to stop concealer creasing

Four causes, and the formula is the last of them. Work through the first three before you buy anything.

Short answer

Halve the amount, hydrate the area at least two minutes beforehand, press rather than blending outward, and set with a trace of very fine powder or not at all. Change the formula last — most creasing is quantity, not product.

Why this is hard over 50

Under-eye creasing is the most common makeup complaint over 50 and the most commonly misdiagnosed. People change concealer three or four times in a year while continuing to do the thing that causes it, which is usually using two or three times as much product as the area can carry.

The reason that area is so unforgiving is anatomical. The skin under the eye is roughly a third the thickness of the skin on your cheek, it holds less moisture, and it sits directly on the orbicularis muscle, which contracts every time you blink — several thousand times a day. The area is also slightly concave, so anything that moves has a low point to move into.

Four things cause creasing, in this order of frequency. Too much product, by a wide margin. An under-hydrated under-eye, which creases more sharply and drinks the concealer dry. A formula that sets rigid, which cracks along the fold. And too much setting powder — which is the standard fix and is itself the fourth cause.

Work through them in that order. The great majority of people stop needing a new concealer somewhere around step three, and the steps are free.

Best formula if you get to step six

Trinny London Eye BFF Serum Concealer

concealer · Premium price band

A serum-textured concealer with light-to-medium coverage, formulated with vitamin C and hyaluronic acid.

The best-behaved formula on a creasing under-eye, because it never fully sets. Serum-textured with hyaluronic acid, so it stays flexible and slightly hydrating all day — which means when the skin folds, the product folds with it rather than breaking along the line.

How it handles

Wide stackable pot with a doe-foot wand — easier to grip than a slim pen.

What to know

Light-to-medium coverage at premium price, and because it stays soft it transfers onto the lower lid if you over-apply.

EcoTools Bioblender Makeup Sponge

tool · Drugstore price band

A biodegradable blending sponge with a tapered tip for the under-eye.

The under-eye needs a small contact area and almost no pressure, and a large sponge base pushes product sideways into the fine lines you were covering. A tapered tip lets you press a small amount exactly where it goes — and it is held in the palm, so it needs no grip.

How it handles

Palm-held, with no grip strength required.

What to know

Rinse after every use, and the tapered point wears out before the body does.

Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder

setting powder · Premium price band

A very finely milled translucent powder with a low-weight, soft-focus finish.

Milling is the only thing that matters here. A very finely milled powder controls movement at a fraction of the weight, where a coarse one sits visibly in the fold and makes it read as a defined pale channel — which is the fourth cause of creasing arriving as the attempted fix.

How it handles

Jar with a sifter.

What to know

Premium price for a translucent powder, loose in a sifter jar so it spills if your grip slips.

Bobbi Brown Creamy Corrector

color corrector · Premium price band

A peach- and pink-toned corrector pot for neutralizing blue-gray under-eye shadow before concealer goes on.

The indirect route to step one. A peach corrector cancels the blue-gray cast of under-eye shadow, so the concealer over it only has to even out tone rather than fight a color — which means noticeably less of it. Using less concealer is the whole point of this page.

How it handles

Screw-top pot — it needs a finger or a brush, and two hands to open.

What to know

An extra step, and the screw-top pot needs two hands and a fingertip or brush.

Step by step

  1. Halve the amount — genuinely half

Dispense onto the back of your hand rather than applying the wand to your face, and use about half what you would have. Most people apply enough product to cover the darkest point across the whole under-eye, which guarantees creasing everywhere else. Two small dots is usually right.

  2. Place it on the shadow only, not the whole area

Find the shadow with a mirror and a light in front of you: tilt your chin down and look up. What is actually dark is usually a narrow crescent at the inner corner and a line along the tear trough — not the whole region from lash line to cheekbone. Put product on the dark part and nowhere else. Stop a couple of millimeters short of the lash line.

  3. Hydrate the area properly, at least two minutes beforehand

An eye cream or light moisturizer with an emollient component, applied below the lash line. Hydrated skin creases less sharply and does not pull moisture out of the concealer. Twenty minutes ahead is better than two, and overnight matters more than morning — but concealer over wet eye cream will not stay put, so the wait is not optional.

  4. Press, never blend outward

Press with a fingertip or a tapered sponge tip and let the edges soften by themselves. Blending outward drags a thin film of pigment onto skin that did not need it, which both wastes coverage and creates more area to crease. Press down, lift, move a few millimeters, press again.

  5. Set with a trace, or not at all

If you can see the powder, there is too much on. Pick up a very finely milled powder on a small brush, tap almost all of it off, and press it onto the inner corner only. If you used a small amount of a flexible concealer placed only on the shadow, there may be nothing to set — and leaving it unset is frequently the better result.

  6. Only now change the formula

If all five steps are in place and it still creases, the formula is the remaining variable. Switch to something creamy, hydrating and light-to-medium — never full-coverage matte or longwear. And check how old your concealer is: a product that has thickened in the tube creases far more readily than a fresh one.

Why heavy setting makes it worse

The standard advice is to set concealer with powder to stop it creasing, and on mature skin that advice is responsible for a great deal of the creasing it was meant to prevent.

Powder scatters light differently from skin. A line with powder sitting in it reads as a defined pale channel rather than a soft crease — so the line becomes more visible, not less, the moment the powder goes on. Then as the product moves slightly through the day, the powder moves with it and concentrates further into the fold.

Baking — loading loose powder onto wet concealer and leaving it several minutes before brushing it off — is the extreme version. It is a photography technique developed for young skin under studio lighting, and on mature skin it leaves a dry, heavy patch that creases within the hour.

The amount that genuinely helps is a trace, of a very finely milled powder, pressed rather than swept, on the inner corner only — enough to stop a soft formula moving, not enough to see.

And not setting at all is a legitimate choice. If you used a small amount of a flexible concealer placed only on the shadow, there is little to hold in place. See should you set concealer with powder.

What to do when it has already creased

Mid-afternoon recovery, which is more useful than most advice about mornings.

Press, do not add. Put a clean fingertip on the creased line and press gently. A flexible formula will largely redistribute and the line will soften. This takes five seconds and works far better than it sounds.

Do not apply more concealer over it. Adding product to a creased line puts more material into the channel, which is the opposite of what is needed.

If pressing is not enough, lift it off. A clean damp fingertip or the corner of a tissue pressed onto the line removes the concentrated product rather than spreading it. Then press a very small amount of fresh concealer on if you want to.

Do not powder it at that point. Powder over a creased line sets the problem in place.

And note what time it happened. Creasing at 11am means too much product; creasing at 4pm means a long day and a formula at the end of its wear, which is a different and more forgivable thing.

Doing this with unsteady hands or low vision

Every step on this page becomes easier rather than harder when adapted, which is unusual.

Pressing with a fingertip is the most accessible technique in makeup. It needs no tool, no grip and no pinch, and it is the technique this page recommends anyway — so there is nothing to trade off.

Dispense onto the back of your hand. It gives you dose control without needing precision at the face, which addresses step one directly.

Use a wide-applicator concealer. More coverage per stroke means fewer strokes and less dragging on thin skin — see best concealer for mature skin.

Brace for step four. Elbow on a table, little finger resting on your cheekbone. A braced hand places a small amount accurately; a hovering one does not.

Magnification helps with step two specifically, because finding the actual shadow rather than treating the whole area is a seeing problem. A standing lit mirror with a 10x panel makes that identifiable — then check the result at 1x, because 10x makes everything look subtle.

And skip step five entirely if handling a loose powder is awkward. It is the least necessary step and leaving it out is often an improvement.

Questions people ask

How do I stop concealer creasing under my eyes?

Halve the amount, place it on the shadow only rather than the whole under-eye, hydrate the area at least two minutes beforehand, press rather than blending outward, and set with a trace of very fine powder or not at all.

Does setting powder stop concealer creasing?

A trace of very finely milled powder helps; more than that causes creasing. Powder in a fold makes the fold read as a defined pale channel, so a heavily set under-eye looks worse than an unset one.

Where exactly should under-eye concealer go?

On the shadow only — usually a narrow crescent at the inner corner and along the tear trough, not the whole area from lash line to cheekbone. Covering the whole area with enough product to hide the darkest part guarantees creasing.

What should I do if my concealer has already creased?

Press the line gently with a clean fingertip — a flexible formula will largely redistribute and the line will soften. Do not add more concealer, and do not powder over it.

Should I use eye cream before concealer?

Yes, with timing: at least two minutes beforehand and ideally twenty, applied below the lash line. Hydrated skin creases less sharply, but concealer over wet eye cream will not stay where you put it.
