Concealer

Concealer that doesn't end up in the crease

Creasing has four causes and only one of them is the formula. The other three are free to fix.

A woman applying under-eye patches as part of a morning skincare routine

Short answer

Creasing has four causes: too much product, an under-hydrated under-eye, a formula that sets rigid, and too much setting powder. Fix the first three before changing concealer. The formula that resists it best is creamy, hydrating and light-to-medium — never full-coverage matte.

Why this is hard over 50

Creasing is the single most common complaint about makeup on mature skin, and the thing worth knowing before you buy anything is that it has four causes, three of which are free to fix. People change concealer four times in a year while continuing to do the three things that were actually causing it.

Cause one: too much product. This is the biggest by a distance. A crease is a fold in the skin, and a fold collects whatever is loose nearby. The more product sitting on the surface, the more there is to collect. Most people use two or three times what they need.

Cause two: an under-hydrated under-eye. Thin skin that is short of water creases more readily and the creases are sharper. It also drinks moisture out of the concealer, which then dries, stiffens and breaks along the fold.

Cause three: a formula that sets rigid. Longwear and full-coverage matte concealers are engineered to form a hard, low-transfer film. A hard film on skin that moves every time you blink cracks, and the crack holds pigment.

Cause four: too much setting powder. The standard fix is the fourth cause. Powder in a crease makes the crease read as a pale defined channel, so a heavily set under-eye looks worse than an unset one would have.

Work through those in order and most people solve this without buying anything. If you have, and it still creases, then the formula is the variable left — and the picks below are the ones that behave.

The picks in full

Best overall for creasing

Trinny London Eye BFF Serum Concealer

concealer · Premium price band

A serum-textured concealer with light-to-medium coverage, formulated with vitamin C and hyaluronic acid.

The best-behaved concealer here on a creasing under-eye, and the reason is that it never fully sets. It is serum-textured and formulated with hyaluronic acid, so it stays flexible and slightly hydrating all day — which means when the skin folds, the product folds with it rather than breaking. The wide pot is also easier to grip than a slim pen, and the doe-foot gives you control over a small amount.

How it handles

Wide stackable pot with a doe-foot wand — easier to grip than a slim pen.

What to know

Light-to-medium coverage at premium price, and a formula that never fully sets will transfer onto your lower lid if you apply too much.

Best with real coverage

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer

concealer · Premium price band

A creamy medium-coverage concealer with a radiant finish and a broad shade range.

The one to choose if you need medium coverage and still cannot afford to crease. It stays creamy rather than setting hard, and the radiant finish means it keeps returning light instead of drying to a flat patch that shows every line it sits in. Applied thin and set with almost nothing, it holds well.

How it handles

Click-pen with a built-in doe-foot. The click mechanism needs a firm thumb press.

What to know

The click pen needs a firm thumb press. On a genuinely crepey under-eye, medium coverage is still more product than the area wants.

e.l.f. Cosmetics Hydrating Camo Concealer

concealer · Drugstore price band

A hydrating medium-coverage concealer with a satin finish and an unusually large doe-foot applicator.

Hydrating is the operative word: it does not dry down tight, which is what breaks along a fold. At drugstore price you can also afford to be generous with how often you replace it, and an old, thickened concealer creases much more readily than a fresh one — which is a cause nobody mentions.

How it handles

Wide doe-foot on a screw cap. The oversized applicator covers more ground per stroke, so there is less blending to do.

What to know

The oversized applicator puts down more than you need. Tap most of it off first.

Best for minimal coverage

Clinique Even Better All-Over Concealer + Eraser

concealer · Mid price band

A light-to-medium concealer with a hydrating, natural finish.

The least product of the covering options, which on a creasing under-eye is the most useful property available. Light-to-medium, hydrating, fragrance-free, and the cushion applicator deposits noticeably less than a doe-foot. If your under-eye creases no matter what, going lighter rather than better is usually the answer.

How it handles

Click-pen with a cushion applicator.

What to know

Not enough for pronounced dark circles. Click pen with a firm press.

Best when nothing else works

jane iredale Active Light Under-Eye Concealer

concealer · Mid price band

A sheer, brightening under-eye concealer in a click pen.

The honest last resort before going bare: a sheer brightening product rather than a covering one. It lifts the inner corner where shadow is deepest without putting enough material on the skin to crease at all. For a deeply crepey under-eye this is frequently a better result than a well-chosen concealer.

How it handles

Click-pen with a brush tip.

What to know

It genuinely does not cover. If you have pronounced dark circles this will not hide them.

Best powder to set with

Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder

setting powder · Premium price band

A very finely milled translucent powder with a low-weight, soft-focus finish.

If you are going to set — and you may not need to — this is the milling you want. It is about as finely milled as the category gets, which means a trace amount controls movement without sitting visibly in the fold. Coarse powder is the fourth cause of creasing, and this is how you avoid being caught by it.

How it handles

Jar with a sifter.

What to know

Loose powder in a sifter jar, so it spills if your grip slips. Premium price for a translucent powder.

EcoTools Bioblender Makeup Sponge

tool · Drugstore price band

A biodegradable blending sponge with a tapered tip for the under-eye.

The tapered tip is why this is here. The under-eye needs a small contact area and almost no pressure, and a large sponge base pushes concealer sideways into the fine lines you were covering. A tapered point lets you press a small amount exactly where it goes and nowhere else.

How it handles

Palm-held, with no grip strength required.

What to know

Needs rinsing after every use, and the tapered tip wears out before the body does.

The fix, in order

Do these in sequence. Most people stop needing a new concealer somewhere around step three.

  1. Halve the amount. Genuinely half. Two small dots on the shadow, nothing across the rest of the under-eye.
  2. Hydrate the area properly and wait. An eye cream or a light moisturizer, applied below the lash line, at least two minutes before anything else — and ideally twenty. Skin that is short of water creases more sharply and drinks the concealer dry.
  3. Press, do not blend outward. Press with a fingertip or a tapered sponge and let the edges soften by themselves. Blending outward drags product across the lines you were trying to avoid.
  4. Set with almost nothing, or not at all. A trace of very finely milled powder, pressed on. If you can see the powder, it is too much.
  5. Only then change the formula — to something creamy, hydrating and light-to-medium, never full-coverage matte.
  6. Check how old your concealer is. A product that has thickened in the tube creases far more readily than a fresh one, and this is a surprisingly common cause.

Why longwear concealer creases worst

It is worth understanding this properly, because longwear is the feature people reach for when creasing is the problem — and it makes it worse.

Longwear and transfer-proof formulas work by forming a film that resists water, oil and friction. To do that, the film has to be relatively hard and relatively continuous. That is genuinely useful on a cheek, which barely moves.

Under the eye, the skin moves every time you blink — several thousand times a day — and a hard continuous film cannot follow that movement. It fails the way any rigid material fails under repeated flexing: it cracks, along the line of greatest movement, which is exactly where your crease is. Then pigment collects in the crack and the line is now darker than the skin either side.

A flexible formula fails differently and much more gracefully: it moves with the skin, and what little migration happens is diffuse rather than concentrated into a line.

So if you want coverage that lasts under the eye, the route is not a harder film. It is a flexible formula, used sparingly, over properly hydrated skin, with the lightest possible set — and accepting that you may need to press it back into place once during a long day. That is a better outcome than a cracked line at 2pm.

What we'd skip

Full-coverage matte and longwear concealers under the eye. A hard film on skin that flexes thousands of times a day cracks, and the crack holds pigment.

Baking. Loading loose powder onto wet concealer and leaving it several minutes is a photography technique for young skin. On mature skin it produces a dry heavy patch that creases within the hour.

Setting spray over a creasing under-eye. It will not stop a rigid film cracking, and the wetting-and-drying cycle can make it worse.

A concealer you have had for two years. It thickens, and thickened product creases far more readily. This is cheap to fix.

Questions people ask

What concealer doesn't crease on mature skin?

A creamy, hydrating, light-to-medium formula that never fully sets — Trinny London Eye BFF Serum Concealer is the best-behaved, and e.l.f. Hydrating Camo does the same job at drugstore price. Avoid anything full-coverage matte or longwear.

How do I stop concealer creasing under my eyes?

Halve the amount, hydrate the area at least two minutes beforehand, press rather than blending outward, and set with a trace of very fine powder or not at all. Change the formula last, not first.

Does setting powder stop concealer creasing?

A trace of very finely milled powder helps; more than that causes creasing rather than preventing it. Powder in a fold makes the fold read as a defined pale channel, so a heavily set under-eye looks worse than an unset one.

Why does longwear concealer crease more?

Because longwear is achieved with a harder, continuous film, and a hard film cannot follow skin that flexes every time you blink. It cracks along the line of greatest movement, and pigment collects in the crack.

Can I use eye cream under concealer?

Yes, and you should — hydrated skin creases less sharply. The only rule is timing: apply it at least two minutes beforehand, ideally longer, and keep it below the lash line. Concealer over wet eye cream will not stay put.
