Foundation

BB cream, CC cream or foundation?

The letters are marketing, but the products behind them are genuinely different. Here is what each one is for.

Short answer

A BB cream is a tinted moisturizer with SPF — light coverage, hydration-led. A CC cream is pigment-corrected for tone problems, usually thicker and higher coverage, and the best choice if redness or sallowness is your issue. A foundation is pure coverage with no skincare pretence. For mature skin, CC creams are the most useful of the three.

Why this is hard over 50

The letters came from Korean beauty marketing and they were never standardized, so a BB cream from one brand can behave like a CC cream from another. That said, the products have settled into reasonably consistent habits, and the differences are real enough to be worth sorting out.

BB — blemish balm, originally. In practice: a tinted moisturizer with sun protection. Light coverage, hydration-led, usually thin. Sold on being one product instead of three.

CC — color correcting. Pigment chosen to neutralize a tone problem rather than just to match depth: typically more yellow or peach than an equivalent foundation shade, which is what cancels redness and sallowness. These tend to be thicker and carry more coverage than a BB, and some of them are full-coverage.

Foundation makes no skincare claim and is formulated purely for coverage, finish and wear, across the whole range from sheer to full.

For mature skin the CC cream is the most interesting of the three, because the two most common complexion complaints over 50 are redness and an uneven, slightly sallow tone — and a corrected pigment addresses both with less product than a foundation would need. The trade-off is weight, and weight is what settles in a crease.

The picks in full

Best CC cream

IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream Illumination SPF 50+

cc cream · Mid price band

A thick, full-coverage color-correcting cream with SPF 50+ and a luminous finish.

The product that defines what a CC cream is good for. Full coverage, color-correcting pigment that genuinely neutralizes redness, and SPF 50+ — which on skin that has thinned is worth more than most of the other claims in this category combined. It stays hydrating enough that the thickness does not go chalky, which is unusual at this coverage level.

How it handles

Squeeze tube with a screw cap. The tube needs a real squeeze, and that gets harder as it empties.

What to know

It is heavy, and a thick cream on crepey skin is the formula most likely to show in a crease. The tube is hard to squeeze when half empty.

Best BB-style option

L'Oréal Paris Age Perfect Radiant Serum Foundation with SPF 50

serum foundation · Drugstore price band

A fluid serum-foundation with light-to-medium buildable coverage, a luminous finish and SPF 50.

A better buy than most actual BB creams, doing the same job: light-to-medium buildable coverage with SPF 50, in a serum texture that spreads thinner than any BB cream manages. If you were shopping for a BB cream because you wanted one product with sun protection and a hint of evenness, this is the version that behaves properly on textured skin.

How it handles

Pump bottle — no twisting and no shaking, and it dispenses with one press from either hand.

What to know

Luminous finish needs powder on oily skin. Narrow shade range.

Best hydration-led option

Trinny London BFF De-Stress Tinted Serum

tinted moisturizer · Premium price band

A tinted serum with sheer coverage and a blurring, hydrating finish.

The purest expression of the BB idea — hydration first, tint second — in a formula developed with mature skin in mind. The soft blur comes from moisture rather than silicone film, and it stays flexible rather than setting, so nothing cracks.

How it handles

Pump bottle. The wide stackable pot is easy to grip and hard to knock over.

What to know

Sheer coverage, premium price, and no meaningful SPF. Use sunscreen underneath.

Best straight foundation

Clinique Even Better Makeup SPF 20

liquid foundation · Mid price band

A lightweight liquid with medium coverage, a natural finish and a wide shade range.

The foundation option, for when you want coverage without a skincare claim attached. Medium, buildable, natural finish, wide shade range, fragrance-free. The advantage over a CC cream is the shade range: a corrected pigment is harder to match, and a straight foundation in the right shade looks more like your own skin.

How it handles

Pump bottle.

What to know

No corrective pigment, so strong redness needs a corrector underneath. No SPF worth relying on.

Which should you pick?

If redness is your main problem: CC cream. The corrected pigment does work a foundation shade cannot, and you will use less of it than you would of foundation plus a separate corrector. More detail on the rosacea page.

If your tone is even and your skin is dry: BB cream, or better, a serum foundation used sheer. You want hydration and a hint of evenness, not coverage.

If you need to cover spots or capillaries: foundation at medium coverage, or a sheer base plus concealer. Pigmentation is a targeted problem and a whole-face product is the wrong shape of solution.

If your skin is crepey: avoid the thick end of the CC range. Weight is what settles, and a full-coverage cream is the heaviest thing in this comparison. Thin layers of something flexible is the kinder choice.

If sun protection is the reason you are shopping: CC creams often carry the highest SPF of the three, and that is a legitimate reason to choose one. Check the number rather than assuming.

If shade matching has failed you before: foundation, at the premium end, where the ranges are widest. Corrected pigments in BB and CC creams are genuinely harder to match.

The one-product promise, examined

All three categories are sold on replacing several products, and the claim is worth taking apart because it is half true.

It is true about steps. A CC cream with SPF 50 genuinely replaces a separate sunscreen and a separate foundation, and for anyone who finds opening containers difficult, every product removed from the routine is a real gain. That is not a small benefit — it is the difference between a routine you keep up and one you abandon.

It is less true about quality. A dedicated sunscreen applied at the right thickness protects better than the thin cosmetic layer of a tinted product. A dedicated foundation in a wide range matches better. You are trading a degree of performance for a reduction in effort, which is a reasonable trade to make deliberately and a bad one to make by accident.

The honest middle: if the simplification is what lets you wear sun protection every day, take it. If you were going to apply sunscreen anyway, use a proper one and choose your base on how it looks.

What we'd skip

BB creams in four shades. Narrow ranges are endemic in this category and the mismatch shows at the jaw.

A thick CC cream applied all over crepey skin. Use it where the redness is and something thinner elsewhere, rather than a full-coverage layer across a face that moves.

Relying on a BB cream's SPF 15 as your only sun protection. The rating is earned at an application thickness nobody uses cosmetically.

DD creams, EE creams and anything further down the alphabet. The naming has outrun the formulation differences.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between BB and CC cream?

A BB cream is hydration-led with light coverage and SPF — effectively a tinted moisturizer. A CC cream has pigment chosen to correct a tone problem such as redness or sallowness, is usually thicker, and carries more coverage.

Is CC cream good for mature skin?

Often the most useful of the three, because redness and uneven tone are the two most common complexion complaints over 50 and corrected pigment addresses both with less product. Watch the weight if your skin is crepey.

Can CC cream replace foundation?

Yes, for many people. A full-coverage CC cream like IT Cosmetics CC+ does everything a foundation does and adds sun protection. The trade-off is a narrower shade range and a thicker texture.

Which has the best sun protection?

CC creams, generally — SPF 40 to 50 is common in the category, where many foundations have none. Check the specific number rather than assuming, and remember the rating assumes a thicker layer than most people apply.

Do I still need sunscreen under a BB or CC cream?

If sun protection matters to you, yes. The SPF rating on any tinted product is earned at an application thickness far greater than the cosmetic layer you actually wear.

Where this comes from

How this page was put together. Picks are chosen by reading formulas, ingredient lists, packaging and dispensing design, and the reported experience of people with mature skin. Primer & Poise does not operate a laboratory, does not run a tester panel, and does not claim professional cosmetology, esthetics or medical credentials. Where a figure or a claim could not be verified, this page says so instead of filling the gap. Read the full selection method.
