Dark circles that got darker

After 50 the circle often darkens because the skin thinned, not because you slept badly. That changes what works.

Short answer

On mature skin a dark circle is often a visibility problem rather than a pigment problem: the skin has thinned, so the blue-purple vessels beneath show through. A peach or pink corrector cancels that blue cast, and a thin layer of matched concealer over it does the rest with far less product.

Here for the case where the circle is a shadow rather than a pigment — a hollow or prominent tear trough casting its own shade.

Best for a hollow rather than a color

Why this is hard over 50

Dark circles have several causes and it is worth knowing which you have, because they respond to different things. Pigmentation — genuinely darker skin in the orbital area, more common in deeper skin tones — is a color problem. Shadow from a hollow or a prominent tear trough is a lighting problem, not a color one. And vascular visibility, where the blue-purple network of vessels under the skin shows through, is a transparency problem.

The third is the one that increases with age, and it is the reason a circle can get noticeably darker in your fifties with no change in how much you sleep. The skin under the eye thins, so what is underneath becomes more visible. Nothing cosmetic changes the transparency, but the color of what shows through is highly correctable, because it is blue — and blue is cancelled by peach and orange.

This is why peach correction is one of the genuinely effective techniques in makeup and also one of the most frequently botched. A thin layer of peach or pink-toned corrector under a matched concealer neutralizes the blue cast, so the concealer over it only has to even out tone rather than fight a color. That means dramatically less concealer — which on an under-eye that creases is the whole game.

Doing it wrong is also easy. Too much peach on fair skin looks orange and chalky; too much on deeper skin can read gray. The rule is the same as every corrector on this site: a veil you can barely see, not a layer.

If your circle is a hollow rather than a color — if it looks less dark when you shine a light up at your face from below — then concealer is treating the wrong thing and a very slightly lighter shade placed in the hollow itself, not across the whole area, is what helps. Color corrector versus concealer separates the cases.

The picks in full

Best corrector

Bobbi Brown Creamy Corrector

color corrector · Premium price band

A peach- and pink-toned corrector pot for neutralizing blue-gray under-eye shadow before concealer goes on.

The product that does the actual work on this page. A peach- and pink-toned corrector neutralizes the blue-gray cast of vascular visibility, which is the dominant cause of darkening on mature skin — and once that cast is gone, the concealer over the top has far less to cover, so you can use a fraction of it. Cream texture presses in without dragging.

How it handles

Screw-top pot — it needs a finger or a brush, and two hands to open.

What to know

The screw-top pot needs two hands and a fingertip or brush, which is awkward with sore hands. Overdone, peach reads orange on fair skin.

NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer

concealer · Premium price band

A creamy medium-coverage concealer with a radiant finish and a broad shade range.

The right partner for a corrector: creamy, radiant rather than matte, and with the shade range to find your actual tone rather than something close. Over a corrected under-eye you need only a thin layer, and this stays flexible enough that a thin layer does not break along the fold by mid-afternoon.

How it handles

Click-pen with a built-in doe-foot. The click mechanism needs a firm thumb press.

What to know

The click pen needs a firm press. Medium coverage is more than a corrected under-eye needs — use a light hand.

e.l.f. Cosmetics Color Correcting Stick

color corrector · Drugstore price band

A twist-up corrector stick sold in green, peach, lavender and yellow tones.

The twist-up format is a real advantage for correction, because you draw a thin line rather than scooping from a pot, which naturally applies less. The peach shade in this range handles blue-gray circles at drugstore price, and the stick needs no second hand and no brush.

How it handles

Twist-up stick drawn straight onto the skin — no brush, no pot, no second hand needed.

What to know

Easy to over-apply if you draw a block instead of a line. Blend with a fingertip, never a dense brush.

Best for circles plus creasing

Trinny London Eye BFF Serum Concealer

concealer · Premium price band

A serum-textured concealer with light-to-medium coverage, formulated with vitamin C and hyaluronic acid.

For the common case where you have both a dark circle and an under-eye that creases at the slightest provocation. It gives light-to-medium coverage in a serum texture that never fully sets, so it stays flexible — and over a peach corrector, light-to-medium is enough.

How it handles

Wide stackable pot with a doe-foot wand — easier to grip than a slim pen.

What to know

Premium price, and because it stays soft it transfers onto the lower lid if you over-apply.

Best for a long day

Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Concealer

concealer · Premium price band

A long-wearing medium-coverage concealer with a natural, low-transfer finish.

The choice when the circle is pronounced and the day is long. Medium coverage with low transfer, so it holds through a wedding or a flight without needing to be rebuilt. Use it over a corrector and apply it thin, which is how you get longwear coverage without the usual longwear penalty.

How it handles

Screw-cap tube with a doe-foot wand.

What to know

A firmer longwear film is more likely to crease on a mobile under-eye. Not an everyday choice if creasing is your main issue.

jane iredale Active Light Under-Eye Concealer

concealer · Mid price band

A sheer, brightening under-eye concealer in a click pen.

Here for the case where the circle is a shadow rather than a pigment — a hollow or prominent tear trough casting its own shade. Covering a shadow with pigment does not work; reflecting light back out of it does, and a sheer brightening product placed in the hollow itself is the tool for that.

How it handles

Click-pen with a brush tip.

What to know

Sheer, so it will not touch a genuinely pigmented circle. Click pen with a brush tip.

Peach correction, done properly

The amount is the whole technique, and it is much less than people expect.

  1. Work out whether you need it. Pull the skin under your eye very gently taut. If the darkness largely disappears, it is vascular or a shadow — correction will help. If it stays, it is pigment, and a matched concealer is the main tool.
  2. Hydrate first and wait. Corrector on tight dry skin goes patchy, and patchy peach is worse than an uncorrected circle.
  3. Use a trace, on the dark part only — usually the inner third. From a stick, a thin line; from a pot, barely anything on a fingertip.
  4. Blend it out with a fingertip until you can only just see it. If the peach is visible as peach, there is too much on.
  5. Thin layer of matched concealer on top, pressed, inner corner only. The corrector has done the color work, so this layer is much smaller than you are used to.
  6. Set with a trace of fine powder, or not at all.

On deeper skin, an orange-leaning corrector often works better than peach, and the whole case is in best color corrector for mature skin.

What darkens circles, and what doesn't help

Some of this is within your control and some is not, and it is worth knowing which is which rather than buying products for the wrong half.

Within your control: dehydration, which makes thin skin look duller and more transparent; rubbing, which irritates the area and can darken it over time; sun exposure, which contributes to pigmented circles specifically; and poor sleep, which affects the vascular appearance temporarily.

Not within your control: how thin your under-eye skin is, how prominent your tear trough is, and the genetic component of orbital pigmentation. These are the structural causes and no cosmetic addresses them.

Things that do not help as much as advertised: caffeine eye creams, which can temporarily reduce puffiness and do little for color; cold spoons, same; and any product promising to eliminate dark circles, which is describing a concealer at best.

Things that genuinely help with the appearance: daily hydration of the area, consistent sun protection, not rubbing, and correct color correction. Three of those four are free.

One honest note: if your circles appeared suddenly, are accompanied by puffiness that does not settle, or come with any other symptom, that is worth mentioning to a doctor rather than concealing.

What we'd skip

Heavy green corrector under the eye. Green cancels red. An under-eye circle is blue-purple, so green pushes it toward gray and makes it look worse. Peach or orange, every time.

A concealer two shades lighter instead of correcting. It produces a pale gray patch over a dark circle, which is more noticeable than the circle.

Full-coverage matte concealer on a pronounced circle. It is the combination most likely to crack along the fold and leave a line darker than the circle was.

Caffeine or peptide eye products bought to fix the color. They may help puffiness. The color is a transparency and pigment problem and they do not address it.

Questions people ask

What concealer is best for dark circles on mature skin?

A peach corrector first — Bobbi Brown Creamy Corrector, or e.l.f.'s Color Correcting Stick at drugstore price — then a thin layer of a matched creamy concealer such as NARS Radiant Creamy over it. The correction means you need far less concealer.

Why did my dark circles get worse after 50?

Usually because the skin under the eye thinned, so the blue-purple vessels beneath it became more visible. That is a transparency change rather than a pigment change, which is why color correction works well on it.

Should I use peach or green corrector for dark circles?

Peach or orange. An under-eye circle is blue-purple, and peach sits opposite it on the color wheel. Green cancels red, so using green here pushes the circle toward gray and makes it look worse.

How do I know if my dark circle is a shadow or pigment?

Pull the skin gently taut, or shine a light up at your face from below. If the darkness largely disappears, it is a shadow or vascular visibility. If it stays, it is pigment and a matched concealer is the main tool.

Do eye creams help dark circles?

They help the area look better hydrated, which makes thin skin look less dull, and some reduce puffiness. They do not change the transparency of the skin or the pigment in it, which is what makes a circle dark.
