Brows drawn as hair, not as shape

A sparse brow looks sparse because of the gaps. Filling them with a block of color is what produces the drawn-on look.

A black and white close portrait showing the detail of an older person's face

Short answer

Use a pencil with a tip around a millimeter or finer and draw short tapered strokes between the surviving hairs, concentrating on the arch and tail and keeping the inner brow soft. Choose a shade slightly lighter than your lashes, in a cool taupe or gray-brown if your hair has grayed.

For the brow problem that is texture rather than density: hairs that grow in the wrong direction or stand away from the brow, which becomes common after 50.

Best for wiry hairs

Why this is hard over 50

Brows do more for a mature face than any other single element of makeup, and they are the easiest thing to get badly wrong. The reason both are true is the same: a brow frames the whole eye area, so a good one lifts everything and a hard one dominates everything.

What happens to brows after 50 is specific. Hairs become sparser, particularly at the tail, which is why the brow appears to end earlier than it did. They lose pigment, going gray, white or simply lighter. And some become wiry and grow in unexpected directions, which is a texture problem rather than a density one.

The near-universal mistake is to treat sparseness as an absence of color and fill it in. A sparse brow looks sparse because there are gaps between hairs, and filling the gaps with a continuous band of pigment produces exactly the hard drawn-on look everybody is trying to avoid — because a solid shape is not what a brow looks like.

The answer is strokes, not blocks. Short tapered marks drawn in the direction the hair grows, between the hairs that remain, read as hair because they are shaped like hair. That requires a genuinely fine tip — around a millimeter or less — and it requires drawing rather than coloring, which is a different motion and takes a little practice.

The second thing to get right is shade, and this is where most ranges fail mature brows. A graying brow needs a cool taupe or gray-brown, not the warm browns that dominate the category — and a brow that is warmer or darker than your hair reads as drawn on no matter how well you drew it. Best eyebrow pencil for sparse mature brows goes deeper on technique for a very sparse brow.

The picks in full

Best overall

Benefit Cosmetics Precisely, My Brow Pencil

brow pencil · Mid price band

A fine, waxy brow pencil with a spoolie, sold across a wide shade range that includes cool grays.

The best combination of a genuinely fine tip and a shade range that includes mature brows. The tip is fine enough to draw individual hair strokes rather than a band, the waxy formula grips the skin between hairs instead of sliding off, and critically the range carries cool shades and grays — which is the thing almost no other brow range does properly and the thing a graying brow actually needs.

How it handles

Twist-up barrel with a slim grip.

What to know

The slim twist-up barrel needs a reasonable pinch grip, which is awkward with sore fingers. Mid price band.

COVERGIRL Easy Breezy Brow Micro-Fine + Define Pencil

brow pencil · Drugstore price band

A micro-fine brow pencil with a spoolie end, fine enough to draw individual hair strokes.

A micro-fine tip at drugstore price, which is unusual — most cheap brow pencils are thick enough that drawing hair strokes is impossible and you end up blocking in by default. This one is genuinely fine enough to stroke, it twists up so there is no sharpener, and the spoolie on the other end is what softens the strokes afterward.

How it handles

Twist-up barrel, so there is no sharpener and no two-handed step.

What to know

Shade range is narrow and warm-leaning, so a cool-toned or gray brow may not find a match.

Best for the finest strokes

Huda Beauty #BombBrows Microshade Brow Pencil

brow pencil · Mid price band

A very fine-tipped brow pencil designed for hair-like strokes rather than filled blocks.

The finest tip of the group, designed specifically for hair-like strokes rather than filling. On a brow where you are drawing between widely spaced hairs — which is the harder version of this job — the extra fineness is what keeps individual marks reading as hairs rather than merging into a line.

How it handles

Twist-up with a spoolie end.

What to know

A very fine tip needs more control and breaks more easily under pressure. Mid price band, and the range is warm-leaning.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz Skinny Brow Pencil

brow pencil · Premium price band

An ultra-slim retractable brow pencil with a spoolie, widely used on sparse brows.

The pencil most widely used for sparse brows, and it earns the position: ultra-slim, retractable, with a spoolie, and available in a reasonable spread of shades including cooler options. If you want the product most people in this category have settled on, this is it.

How it handles

Twist-up, but the barrel is very slim and the fine tip snaps under pressure.

What to know

The barrel is very slim and the fine tip snaps under pressure, which makes it one of the less forgiving pencils here if your grip is unreliable. Premium price.

Milk Makeup Kush Fiber Brow Gel

brow gel · Mid price band

A tinted fiber brow gel that adds visible texture rather than a solid block of color.

Worth owning alongside any pencil. A tinted fiber gel adds visible texture across the whole brow in one stroke — which is the thing a pencil cannot do, since a pencil adds marks and a gel adds body. Drawing the gaps with a pencil and then brushing a fiber gel through is the two-step routine that looks most like hair.

How it handles

Screw-cap tube with a spiral brush — one stroke per brow, with no precision drawing.

What to know

A gel, not a pencil — it cannot create a shape or extend a tail. Screw-cap tube with a spiral brush.

GUIDE Beauty Brow Line All-in-One Brow Gel

brow gel · Mid price band

An all-in-one brow gel that fills, shapes and sets in a single pass.

The alternative if a slim pencil is simply not usable. It is an all-in-one brow gel that fills, shapes and sets in a single pass, from a range designed around reduced dexterity and supported grip. One stroke per brow and no precision drawing — a real answer rather than a compromise if holding a fine pencil is the obstacle.

How it handles

Built around a supported grip rather than a pinch, from a range designed for reduced dexterity.

What to know

A gel cannot draw individual hairs or extend a sparse tail. Mid price band.

Best for wiry hairs

e.l.f. Cosmetics Brow Lift Clear Eyebrow Shaping Wax

brow gel · Drugstore price band

A clear shaping wax in a pot that holds unruly or wiry brow hairs in place.

For the brow problem that is texture rather than density: hairs that grow in the wrong direction or stand away from the brow, which becomes common after 50. A clear shaping wax holds them where you brushed them for the whole day, and on some brows that single change does more than any pencil.

How it handles

Screw-top pot with a built-in brush.

What to know

Clear, so it adds no color or density. The screw-top pot needs two hands plus a fingertip or brush.

How to draw strokes rather than fill

Six steps. The motion in step three is the one that matters.

  1. Brush the brow up and out with a spoolie first. This shows you where the gaps actually are, which is usually different from where you assumed.
  2. Start at the arch and work outward to the tail. This is where brows thin first and where definition does the most for the eye. Do not start at the inner corner.
  3. Draw short marks in the direction the hair grows, with the pencil almost flat against the skin. Short means a few millimeters. Flat means you are drawing with the edge of the tip rather than the point, which produces a tapered mark rather than a hard line. Lift between strokes.
  4. Keep the inner third almost bare. A dark inner brow is the single most aging brow mistake — it closes the eye and reads immediately as drawn. One or two very light strokes at most.
  5. Brush through with the spoolie. This softens every mark you made and blends them into the real hairs. Never skip it.
  6. Set with a clear wax or gel if your hairs move. Otherwise leave it.

The sparse-brow version of this technique, including how to rebuild a tail, is in how to fill in sparse brows over 60.

Choosing the shade when your hair has grayed

This is where most brow products fail this audience, and it is worth being specific.

Go cool, not warm. The brow category is dominated by warm browns — chestnut, auburn, medium brown — because they suit brown hair. Gray, white and silver hair is cool, and a warm brow against cool hair reads orange and obviously applied.

Go lighter than your lashes, never darker. A brow lighter than the lash line looks natural; a brow darker than it almost never does. If you wear brown mascara, your brow should be softer still.

Taupe is the single most useful mature brow shade and is stocked in surprisingly few ranges. It is a cool gray-brown and it works on everything from light gray to dark gray hair.

For white or silver hair, a soft gray — not black, not brown. Several ranges carry a gray or granite shade specifically for this, and it is worth seeking out.

Test on the brow itself, not on your hand. Draw three strokes at the tail and look in daylight. A brow shade that looks right on the back of your hand is frequently two steps too warm on the face.

And if nothing matches, go one shade lighter than you think. Too light reads as a soft brow; too dark reads as a mistake.

What we'd skip

Thick brow pencils. If the tip is wider than about a millimeter you cannot draw hair strokes with it and you will end up blocking the brow in, which is the thing that produces the drawn-on look.

Brow pomades and dark powders on a sparse mature brow. Both deposit color across an area rather than in marks, which is the wrong operation. See pencil versus powder versus pomade.

Warm browns on gray or white hair. They read orange against cool hair, and the mismatch is more noticeable than sparseness would have been.

A dark inner brow. It closes the eye and is the most aging brow mistake there is.

Brow stencils. They enforce a shape that is not yours and they encourage filling rather than stroking.

Questions people ask

What is the best eyebrow pencil for older women?

Benefit Precisely, My Brow Pencil — a genuinely fine tip plus a shade range that includes the cool taupes and grays a graying brow needs. COVERGIRL Easy Breezy Brow Micro-Fine is the drugstore option with a comparably fine tip.

How do you fill in sparse eyebrows without looking drawn on?

Draw short tapered marks in the direction the hair grows, between the existing hairs, with the pencil almost flat against the skin — then brush through with a spoolie. A continuous band of color is what produces the drawn-on look.

What brow shade should I use with gray hair?

A cool taupe or soft gray-brown, and lighter than your lashes rather than darker. Warm browns read orange against cool gray or white hair, and that mismatch is more noticeable than a sparse brow would have been.

Should the inner part of my brow be dark?

No — keep it almost bare. A dark inner brow closes the eye and is the most aging brow mistake there is. Concentrate definition at the arch and tail.

What if I can't hold a thin brow pencil?

Use an all-in-one brow gel instead, such as GUIDE Beauty Brow Line, which fills, shapes and sets in one stroke and is designed around a supported grip. A fiber brow gel brushed through also adds visible density without any precision drawing.
