Lashes, lenses and the marks in between

Lashes brushing a lens leave marks. A flaking formula leaves worse ones. Both have the same answer.

Short answer

Use a tubing mascara: it does not flake, so nothing lands on the inside of your lenses, and it does not soften against a lens that touches your lashes. If you are short-sighted your lenses make your eyes look smaller, so you can afford more definition than you think.

GUIDE Beauty Lash Wrap Mascara

Smudge-proof and tubing, which together solve both of the mechanical glasses problems: nothing flakes onto the lens, and contact with the back of the lens does not soften or transfer the product.

Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara

The tubing formula with the most visible length, which makes it the right choice if your lenses shrink the eye area.

blinc Mascara Amplified

The right choice if you wear reading glasses or varifocals, because a magnifying lens is unforgiving of clumps and this formula stays clean and separated rather than building.

Ilia Limitless Lash Lengthening Mascara

The dual-sided brush separates as it deposits, and separation is what a magnifying lens rewards — clumped lashes look much worse through a plus lens than they do bare.

Benefit Cosmetics Precisely, My Brow Pencil

Included because behind glasses the brow does more work than the lashes do: the frame draws a horizontal line across your face, and a defined brow above it keeps the eye area from reading as flat.

Why this is hard over 50

Glasses create three distinct mascara problems, and they are rarely discussed together even though most people who wear glasses have all three.

Lashes touch the lens. Depending on frame shape, lash length and how the glasses sit, upper lashes brush the back of the lens every time you blink. That leaves marks on the lens, transfers product off the lashes, and over a day flattens the lash against the lid.

Formulas flake onto the lens. A drying wax formula sheds small particles, and with a lens a few millimeters away those particles land somewhere obvious. This is the thing people notice most and attribute to the frames.

The prescription changes the look. A minus lens for short-sightedness makes the eye area appear slightly smaller, which is why so many short-sighted people feel their eye makeup vanishes behind their glasses. A plus lens for reading or long-sightedness magnifies, so any clump, flake or stray mark appears larger.

A tubing mascara addresses the first two directly: the polymer sleeve does not flake and does not soften from contact, so there is nothing to deposit on a lens. The third is a judgment about how much definition to use, and it runs in opposite directions depending on your prescription — which is why generic advice about eye makeup and glasses is so often unhelpful.

The other half of this, including where frames cast shadow on your under-eye, is in how to apply makeup when you wear glasses.

GUIDE Beauty Lash Wrap Mascara

mascara · Mid price band

A smudge-proof tubing mascara from a range designed throughout for people with reduced movement or strength.

Smudge-proof and tubing, which together solve both of the mechanical glasses problems: nothing flakes onto the lens, and contact with the back of the lens does not soften or transfer the product. The supported-grip handle also helps with the practical awkwardness of applying mascara accurately when you have had to take your glasses off to do it.

How it handles

The applicator sits in a moulded handle with a finger rest, so the hand is supported rather than held in mid-air.

What to know

Mid price band and modest volume — which is a drawback specifically if you are short-sighted and need more apparent definition.

Best for definition behind a minus lens

Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara

mascara · Mid price band

A tubing mascara that wraps each lash in a polymer sleeve and removes with warm water rather than solvent.

The tubing formula with the most visible length, which makes it the right choice if your lenses shrink the eye area. You get the definition that compensates for the apparent reduction, without flaking onto the lens or softening where the lashes touch it.

How it handles

Standard screw-cap tube. The wand is slim, so it still needs a steady pinch grip.

What to know

Mid price band. Longer lashes also brush the lens more, so if contact is your main problem this may make it worse rather than better.

Best for a plus lens

blinc Mascara Amplified

mascara · Mid price band

The original tubing mascara, oil-free, sold in black and brown, and removed with warm water and gentle pressure.

The right choice if you wear reading glasses or varifocals, because a magnifying lens is unforgiving of clumps and this formula stays clean and separated rather than building. Modest volume is an advantage here rather than a limitation: under magnification, less is more.

How it handles

Screw-cap tube.

What to know

Modest volume will feel like too little if you are short-sighted rather than long-sighted.

Best for separation under magnification

Ilia Limitless Lash Lengthening Mascara

mascara · Premium price band

A lengthening mascara built on beeswax and carnauba, with a dual-sided brush for separating fine lashes.

The dual-sided brush separates as it deposits, and separation is what a magnifying lens rewards — clumped lashes look much worse through a plus lens than they do bare. On a varifocal, where the reading portion sits over your lower lashes, that separation matters most.

How it handles

Screw-cap tube with a slim wand.

What to know

Premium price, and it is wax-based, so it can flake over a long day. Removal needs oil rather than warm water.

e.l.f. Cosmetics Lash Xtndr Tubing Mascara

mascara · Drugstore price band

A budget tubing mascara that coats each lash in a water-resistant polymer tube.

A tubing formula at drugstore price, so you can test whether switching format stops the marks on your lenses without spending much. It does for most people, because the mechanism — a continuous polymer sleeve rather than a drying wax film — is the same as the expensive versions.

How it handles

Screw-cap tube.

What to know

Less length and separation than the premium tubing options.

Best brow pencil for glasses wearers

Benefit Cosmetics Precisely, My Brow Pencil

brow pencil · Mid price band

A fine, waxy brow pencil with a spoolie, sold across a wide shade range that includes cool grays.

Included because behind glasses the brow does more work than the lashes do: the frame draws a horizontal line across your face, and a defined brow above it keeps the eye area from reading as flat. A fine pencil with a wide shade range — including cool grays — lets you define without the hard drawn-on look that a magnifying lens exaggerates.

How it handles

Twist-up barrel with a slim grip.

What to know

A brow pencil, not a mascara. The slim twist-up barrel needs a reasonable pinch grip.

Applying mascara when you cannot see without your glasses

The practical problem nobody addresses: you have to take your glasses off to apply mascara, and then you cannot see your lashes.

Get magnification, not more light alone. A standing lighted mirror with a 10x panel is the single most useful purchase here, because it substitutes for the glasses you had to remove. See best makeup mirror for low vision.

One lens down, if your frames allow. Some people apply one eye at a time by pushing their glasses up or sliding them down and looking over the top. It is awkward and it works, and it is worth trying before buying anything.

Brace properly. Elbow on the table, little finger on the cheekbone. When you cannot see precisely, stability matters more — a steady hand in roughly the right place beats an unsteady one aiming carefully.

Work by feel at the root. Pressing the wand into the base of the lashes and wiggling is a motion you can do by touch, and the root is where the product does most of its work anyway.

Put your glasses on and check. Then correct. Almost all over-application happens because the check was never done with the lenses on.

Stopping lashes from marking the lens

Partly product, partly frames, partly technique.

Switch to tubing. Nothing flakes and nothing softens on contact, which removes the two causes of marks that come from the mascara itself.

Lift at the root rather than curling the tip. A lash lifted at the base clears the lens better than a lash curled at the end, which arcs upward into it.

Skip the lower lashes. On a varifocal especially, the reading portion of the lens sits right over them.

Have the frames adjusted. This is the fix people never consider and it is usually free at the place you bought them. Lenses that sit a millimeter or two further forward stop touching the lashes entirely, and an optician can adjust the nose pads or temple arms in a couple of minutes.

Consider frame shape when you next buy. A frame with more depth between the lens and the face, or less curvature, keeps lashes clear. Worth mentioning to the dispensing optician, who will not raise it unprompted.

What we'd skip

Drying wax formulas. They flake, and with a lens millimeters away the flakes land where you will see them all day.

Heavy lower-lash application with varifocals. The reading portion of the lens sits directly over the lower lashes.

Eyelash curlers to stop lens contact. A curl arcs the lash tip upward into the lens. Lift at the root instead.

Buying more mascara before having your frames adjusted. If the lenses sit too close, that is the cause, and the adjustment is usually free.

Questions people ask

What mascara is best if you wear glasses?

A tubing formula — GUIDE Beauty Lash Wrap or blinc Mascara Amplified. It does not flake, so nothing lands on the inside of your lenses, and it does not soften where lashes touch the lens.

Should I wear more or less mascara with glasses?

More definition if you are short-sighted, because a minus lens makes the eye area appear smaller. Less if you wear reading glasses or varifocals, because a plus lens magnifies every clump and flake.

How do I stop my lashes touching my glasses?

Lift the lashes at the root rather than curling the tips, switch to a formula that does not transfer, and have an optician adjust the frames — moving the lenses a millimeter or two forward often stops contact entirely, and the adjustment is usually free.

How do I apply mascara if I can't see without my glasses?

Use a standing lighted mirror with a 10x magnification panel, which substitutes for the glasses you had to remove. Brace your elbow and your little finger, work by feel at the root, then put your glasses back on and check before adding more.

Why does mascara end up on the inside of my lenses?

Either the formula is flaking, or your lashes are touching the lens and transferring product onto it. A tubing formula fixes the first; lifting at the root and having the frames adjusted fixes the second.
